Friday the 13th is a comedy drama written by Jean-Pierre Martinez, a French playwright and scriptwriter who was born in 1955 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. He wrote not only Friday the 13th, but also 50 other comedy dramas.The story is about an English couple,
Christine and John, who are broke because both of them are too generous to their friends.
John bought a lottery and later found that he won the lottery worth 60 million pounds while
Natalie, a friend of his and his wife, came with a rather sad news about her possibly dead husband, Patrick, for taking a plane which was reported missing. From then on, the story is basically just trying to manage their emotions for John, Christine and Natalie. It ends with Patrick tripping off the balcony of John and Christine's home, being the only death throughout the story, after deciding for a divorce with Natalie and also the joyful news from Christine's gynaecologist that Christine is pregnant.
In the drama Friday 13th, Christine', Natalie', John’s, Patrick's behaviour are different each other. We can see in the drama script, here are the different:
Lucky vs Unlucky
In the drama, entitled Friday the 13th, Patrick and John are opposing each other in terms of fate. At first, Patrick is the one considered as unlucky because he is said to be taking
an airplane which later reported on the news to be crashed on its way through the Channel
before making a stop in Brussels. As Patrick is unable to be reached out to and presumed to
be as one of the passengers, John is finding out that he wins a lottery which ticket he bought
weeks before when he went visit his mother-in-law in Brighton with his wife.
But later on, once Patrick has called to say that he missed his flight, hence lucky to
not have boarded the airplane which later crashed, John becomes the unlucky one. John is
unlucky because later on Natalie who received the call from her husband, Patrick, said that
John's luggage which Patrick borrowed and took with him as he was going to take the
airplane managed to get into the ship and thought to be lost in the channel as the plane
crashed. John lost his chance to claim the lottery which is worth 60 Million pounds.
Also, in the end of the story, Patrick ended up to be the unlucky one again. He is
indeed the only passenger who had missed the flight, but he ended up to be the one who died.
Patrick tripped off in the balcony while tried to get the falling lottery. Meanwhile, John ended
up to be the lucky one again. He realized that to be the lucky one is not only by getting a
lottery ticket, a love also can be the lucky thing. What's important for John that his family is
stay together and his wife Christine is pregnant?
Optimist v.s Pessimist

“Christine – Listen, I probably shouldn’t say this, but I can’t believe he died. Not tonight…
Natalie – Why not tonight? Christine – I don’t know, it’s… like you said before about your
Dad. That he died on the day your son was born. Just to piss you off. Natalie – You think
Patrick decided to be in a plane crash tonight just to ruin our evening?” (Friday the 13th).
It shows when Christine talk to Natalie, in here Christine optimist that Patrick hasn’t
died yet. Christine gives support to Natalie when Natalie feels pessimist about the situation of
her husband, whether Patrick is alive or dead. Christine tries to give positive energy for
Natalie. As it is known, if Natalie is in a confused situation and feels down and needs support.
Here means that Christine becomes an optimist and Natalie is a pessimist.
Loyalty vs Disloyalty
The sign of the loyalty is a suitcase and lottery ticket. A suitcase floating in the sea
means an ark that oscillates in the sea. The ark is a signified from the ark in the household. In
the drama, the household of John and Christine survived from the divorce. However, Patrick
and Natalie's marriage did not survive from divorce. Lottery ticket in a suitcase which is a
sign of loyalty between John and Christine where wealth is not the most important in their
lives but togetherness is more important.
The marriage between Christine and John stands for true love because the suitcase
where the lottery ticket located was gone. If the suitcase was founded, so their marriage will
fall apart because the lottery ticket money. So, their marriage are based on loyalty.
The marriage between Natalie and Patrick stand for love in disguise/ untrue love because of their disloyalty. The relationship between Natalie, Patrick, and the dentist is like
lizard marriage, where the female lizard pregnant after the female shags several males and the eggs contain the genetic material of all her partners. In the drama, Natalie shags with her husband (Patrick) and the dentist although Natalie was not pregnant. And Patrick shags with the dentist. So, their marriage is based on disloyalty or betrayal.
We conclude that there are opposite behavior between characters behavior.
The luck influences the character’s behaviour in reality. As John thought that he won the lottery, he didn’t really care about his friend’s fortune. He acted as if he was really care about Nathalie and Patrick, but the reality is not. Even though Christine has heard that John and her won the
lottery, she still remained calm and prioritized her best friend, Nathalie in facing the difficult
situation. However, Nathalie, we can depict her as emotional character as she was not ready
to face the situation, all that came out to her mind was negative thinking. As for Patrick, he is
lucky enough to have missed the plane and comes back home alive. But after learning that the lottery ticket which he had found in John's luggage that he borrowed and kept in his coat's
pocket, he becomes greedy. He ends up deciding for a divorce with his wife, Natalie who has been worried about him the whole story, and keeping the lottery ticket for himself instead of
giving it back to John and Christine. But alas, his own greediness costs him his life. He died
after tripping off the balcony for trying to catch the lottery ticket which was blown away to
the edge of the balcony.
